GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT (GED)

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE)

Abundant Rain Ministries, Inc., has networked with NSU Muskogee Adult Learning Center to offer General Education Development and Adult Basic Education classes for five years.

Close to a million young people drop out of schools each year. Hispanics drop out at higher rates than other ethnic groups, and teens living in families with incomes in the lowest twenty percent are more likely to drop out. Teens who leave high school before graduation face a number of potential hardships. Research shows that dropouts earn twenty-five percent less than high-school graduates and less than half of what a college grad is likely to make. Young women who drop out are more likely to have children at younger ages, more likely to become single parents, and to end up on public assitance. At the same time, most high-paying jobs require increasingly advanced skills and technical knowledge.

General Educational Development (GED) is an alternative for anyone age sixteen or older who is out of school without a high school diploma. There are preparatory classes available in a number of settings, this includes cable and public television stations. Although some school districts and legislatures are successfully targeting teenage, dropouts, the most important factor is the influence of parents.

Adults Basic Education (ABE) program provides instruction in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics in order to prepare adult learners for transitioning into the labor market or higher academic or vocational training. The performance measures for ABE programs are outlined in the Workforce Investment Act, Title II, Adult Basic Eduction and Family Literacy. These measures include adult learners who show measurable gains in the following:

     Completing an eductional level

     Passing the GED test

Getting a job or advancing in a job

Entering higher education or vocational training.
